Skincare 101: The basics

Even if you’ve read every parenting book out there, we can promise you there’s still something that will throw you for a loop. For us, baby’s skin—and taking care of it—was one of them. So, with the help of an expert, we collected the best skincare routines so that you have them all in one easy to find place.

Diaper changes

It may go without saying, but sitting in a moist diaper doesn’t do the skin any favors. In fact, if exposed to moisture for too long, diaper rash is inevitable. And because babies spend all day and night in them, frequent diaper changes help to ensure that the baby avoids prolonged exposure to moisture that can lead to unwanted, uncomfortable rashes. Additionally, make sure a barrier cream formulated with zinc oxide is always in the rotation to protect the skin—especially if rashes are or become common.

When possible, choose absorbent diapers that help keep skin dry (like Coterie’s The Diaper) and allow your baby time without a diaper too. Helping the skin to breathe au naturel is another way you can support healthy, thriving skin while simultaneously continuing to introduce the baby (and their skin) to the world around them.

Bath time

It may seem counterintuitive, but bathing babies too frequently can actually be more damaging than helpful. In fact, daily baths for newborns can strip the skin of natural oils, causing dryness. Instead, opt for a bathing cadence that looks more like 2-3 times per week. This is sufficient enough to ensure cleanliness without creating an environment for dryness. In the space between bathtime, focus on keeping the face, neck folds, and the diaper area clean. And as your baby grows and can tolerate more frequent baths, you can adjust your bathing cadence as needed (especially because, as they grow, so too do their messes).

Moisturizers

In the case of most babies, moisturization is helpful. Moisturizing baby’s delicate skin post-bath helps to lock in hydration while also aiding in the strengthening of the skin’s protective barrier. Opt for products that are fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, and specifically designed for babies to add an extra layer of care and protection to your baby’s skincare rituals.

Fabric

While we think about babies being in diapers for prolonged periods of time, we should also put consideration into another thing they’re in for most of the day and night: fabric. It’s important to choose fabrics that are both soft and breathable, and also to choose fragrance-free, hypoallergenic detergents when washing said fabrics too.

Diet

Diet plays an important, albeit indirect, role in your baby’s skin health. Nutrition supports overall development, immunity, and also maintaining a healthy skin barrier. The relationship between diet and specific skin conditions (like eczema or rashes) can vary depending on your baby’s individual sensitivities and underlying health factors, but for most babies, a balanced diet—whether through breast milk, formula, or the introduction of age-appropriate solids—provides essential nutrients that support healthy skin.

Hydration also plays a key role in skin health. Ensuring your baby is well-hydrated, whether through breast milk, formula, or water when developmentally appropriate, helps maintain their skin's moisture levels.

Partnering with your pediatrician ensures a comprehensive approach to both nutrition and skin care.

It’s these gentle, consistent skincare and wellness practices that not only protect baby’s skin, but also nurture a healthy foundation for overall well-being.
